Coherent X-ray Diffraction: An application of x-ray free electron laser

Ultrashort intense coherent x-ray pulses generated from x-ray free electron lasers (XFEL) provide new research opportunities in condensed matters, materials, and biological systems. One of the most important applications of XFEL pulses is to utilize their coherent properties for advanced diffraction and imaging techniques. In this presentation, we introduce the principle of coherent diffraction imaging including image reconstruction and phase retrieval. In addition, we present our recent results on coherent x-ray diffraction imaging using XFEL pulses as well as synchrotron x-rays. The impact of the future coherent x-ray imaging would be great in molecular biology and nanoscience since the structural evolution of a specific molecule or a particle can be followed in a proper time scale.
