"Atomic scale dissipation of mechanical energy probed with scanning probe microscopy

ABSTRACT:

Energy dissipation at surfaces is mediated by excitation of elementary processes including surface phonons and electronic excitations. Scanning probe microscopy has been utilized to elucidate the mechanical, structural, chemical, dynamic and charge transport properties of surfaces and interfaces at the atomic scale, revealing many interesting phenomena associated with energy dissipation. In this talk, I will highlight the recent results on the fundamental aspects on the energy dissipation in mechanical processes such as friction and adhesion. A combined apparatus of atomic force microscopy / scanning tunneling microscopy enabled us to obtain mechanical, structural and electrical characters of surfaces. Several examples will be presented: (i) Friction and adhesion properties on quasicrystalline material; correlation between the exotic atomic structure of quasicrystals and their low friction. (ii) Electronic contribution of nanoscale friction force in the semiconducting substrate. (iii) Nanomechanical and charge transport properties of CdTe tetrapod and organic self-assembled monolayers on conductive substrates. I will discuss the possible application of tuning or switching the frictional response in nanoscale devices.
