"Introduction to Single Molecule Magnet

ABSTRACT:
In recent years a single-molecule magnet (SMM) consisting of a finite number of interacting paramagnetic ions has been intensively investigated by the need for a better understanding of the basic principles of magnetism as well as by the necessity for a miniaturization of electronic devices to a molecular scale. The reported physical phenomena include a magnetic bistability, quantum tunneling of magnetization, quantum phase interference (Berry phase), quantum coherence, and so on. In this seminar, we will give brief introduction to a recent development of this field and discuss our research activities: (i) {Cu3} antiferromagnetic spin triangle and (ii) mixed transition-metal and rare-earth SMMs with hoping to find SMM operating at room temperature.
